Last week we pulled off the river from our final trip of the inaugural Friluftsliv program. It was a weird year to start a program like this, but the students who attended rolled with all the Covid related restrictions, as well as helped us in working out the kinks in the program. It was an absolute blast to be on the river with them for a week, and realize how little I needed to do every day. I tend to go into trips with a guide mentality, highly focused on taking care of people’s needs when they aren’t. This group almost didn’t need me along for the trip, other than to point out where campsites, and advise on how best to tackle certain sections of the river.
As an educator, that’s the most rewarding thing I could think of. Watching this group go through the motions of camp life every day with relative ease, even when the water is low, or it rains for a day straight, they took it all in stride and laughed the whole time. What more can you ask for?
It’s bittersweet to see this particular group’s program come to an end, but we’re already starting to fill spots for the upcoming session, and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and getting started again.
Registration is open for the next session, starting in October. You can register at the link below.
